Chocolate giant Cadbury is to be prosecuted over the salmonella contamination found in its chocolate last year.

It is accused of putting unsafe food on the market and failing to tell the authorities as soon as it found out about it.

Cadbury says the contamination has already cost it £30 million.

Last June Britain's favourite sweet manufacturer was forced to take one million of its chocolate bars off the shelves after minute traces of salmonella were found.

At the time Cadbury said there was never a risk to public health and it was confident its products were safe.
